Stone Ages and Quarries
The Terra Vulcania Discovery Centre in Mayen is devoted to the 7,000 year stone quarrying history and features the title Stone Ages. Here visitors become quarry workers and discover the toils and dangers of the job, as well as the rewards of hard work with volcanic stones. The exhibit is dominated by a large cinema. A mixture of flip-books, animated films, realistic recordings and computer animation show how humans use and continue to change a landscape that has been shaped by volcanic eruptions. The volcanic landscape that visitors explore in the exhibition is found just next door. The open-air exhibition in Mayener Grubenfeld takes visitors on a trip through the strange quarrying landscape with traces of mining from various different eras, as well as the Lapidea Sculpture Park and the Silbersee Lake.
A visit to Terra Vulcania and Mayener Grubenfeld takes about 2 hours.
